Neighborhood Interview from a neighbor who lives there.

How long have you lived in Alewa Heights neighborhood?

I lived in the neighborhood for about 3 years now.

What factors influenced your decision to move to Alewa Heights neighborhood?

We live there because it was a family home. It's been a family home for about 75 years.

How does where you lived before compare?

We used to live in Mililani. Definitely, location is huge. It's convenient because of the location. We live in a much older home; it probably needs a lot more updating, but the convenience of staying near downtown is huge.

How is traffic in and around the neighborhood? For example, getting to stores, downtown, commuting to work, etc.?

It's pretty easy. You have at least 3 different ways of getting to the freeway. So, it's not just one way in and one way out. Getting to the different exits, stores, the schools, and shopping centers is really easy.

Do you have any concerns with crime in your neighborhood?

I wouldn't say that there is violent crime. There's definitely not a lot of drugs and those types of stuff, at least not that we hear of. It's an older community; I would say 80% owner-occupied. It's either the owners or their families who live here. A lot of first-time home buyers built their homes there 75 years ago. I think everybody kind of knows everyone. There might be some instances of crime because there's a lot of elderly. So, people go around and they'll try to sell different things, like whether they can fix up their house, that type of thing. There's more fraud, I think, because there is a lot of elders, like our neighbors are all elders.

How are the schools in your community?

My daughter goes to Ma'ema'e Elementary School, which is probably one of the top five elementary schools in the island. It's a really good school. I think that's why a lot of people, especially with families, live in that area because Ma'ema'e is such a good elementary school.

What is the noise level like? Any excessive noise from traffic, planes, neighbors, etc.?

No. It's quiet, very quiet.

What are the things you like best about your neighborhood?

I like the feeling of being secure, and it's safe. I like the convenience; I like being close to everything.

What are the things that you would like to change about your neighborhood, if any?

I don't think it's a really good community if you have buyers who have children. It's a higher-end area. All the lots and homes are bigger. However, there's not a lot of parks or cul de sacs. It's a lot of shared driveway so there's no place where your kids can just go out and run in a cul de sac. If you play sports, for instance, Mililani was great because my kids play sports, and they were all part of the Mililani soccer or softball club. Living in Alewa Heights, you kind of have to find a league in another area--whether it's Aiea or Kapiolani--that is closest to you, versus living in an actual community--like Hawaii Kai, Mililani or Kapolei. Here in Alewa Heights, it's not a community feel.

What are your neighbors like?

Well I have one elder next to us, who is 92 and she lives by herself and she'll give the home to her family. She's pretty honest. Her son is a firefighter; he comes over every other day. The other neighbors are kind of younger, a local family, maybe in their 50's. The one in front of us, her home was also given to her by her parents.

So it's a common thing, parents handing over their properties to their children?

Yes. Or grandparents. Our home was given from my grandmother to my mother-in-law--it's been passed on to the next generation.

What are your favorite nearby restaurants?

I would have to say Natsunoya Tea House. And we also go to Golden Duck and Helena's.

What about favorite nearby places to shop?

There's Times Supermarket and Longs Drugs.

Are there any events in your neighborhood or nearby that you like to take part in?

We do like to go down to Chinatown on the weekend, but other than that, not really.

Would you recommend buying a house in your neighborhood?

Definitely. If you have people from the mainland or corporate people who come and they want to own a home, it has beautiful, beautiful views. And it's very quiet. If they want a big lot or home but they don't want to pay 2 million dollars for living in Aina Haina or Kahala for example, then they can still get that same feeling of a higher-end home on a big lot and a nice view, but just at a lower price.
