Neighborhood Interview from a neighbor who lives there. |
How long have you lived in the Makiki neighborhood? About 5 years. What factors influenced your decision to move to your neighborhood? I found reasonable housing. It's a studio apartment, but it's very nice. It's a senior housing that is subsidized by the state for me because I'm disabled. I really like it here. Before that, I was on Makiki street with a friend who owns his apartment. I was there for several years. It's convenient. When I need to take the bus, the no. 4 bus takes you all the way to Hawaii Kai or downtown, or up Nuuanu. It's only 2 blocks to the bus stop. I think that's a great way to travel. The stores are close. I have three stores that I can shop at, within walking distance or 3 blocks. Foodland, Safeway, and Times. So I can get all the good deals. How does where you used to live compare to Makiki? I had some financial difficulties. I did live in Kahala for a while, and in Hawaii Kai, but I like it better in town. I've met some really nice people. I walk in the morning, and I see a lot of the same people walking their dogs, and we chat. There's a park nearby where I can go sit and read. There's a pool a couple of blocks away, the community pool on Makiki street, and that's a bonus. They have senior activities and exercise classes that could happen in the morning, and I'm a morning walker. So for me, it's very personal. I like to go out in the morning and say hi to the people and pet their dogs. I'm not allowed to have pets in the building. That's the only thing--nobody wants a pet, nobody wants me to have a cat. So I go out and pet everybody's dog. How is traffic in and around the neighborhood? For example, getting to stores, downtown, commuting to work, etc.? I don't have active work. At this time of year, of course it's different, but I do have a car that I use sometimes, and I've never had a problem with traffic. I live on Kinau Street, and it's near Victoria Street--sometimes there's parking there. So I haven't had any problem with traffic. I don't travel real far, most of my things are just downtown to the store. If I go downtown, I take the bus. It's so easy. Do you have any concerns with crime in the neighborhood? No. I haven't seen anything like th at. It's an older neighborhood. The houses are I think the original owners. There's a lot of seniors in this neighborhood. And like I said, this is a senior building, so you have to be 62 to live here. There has been no crime in our building. We had one incident where someone had given a woman a problem, and he's on the bulletin board as a 911--they put a trespass order against him. That's the only thing in the three years that I've been here. I've never seen any fights. I see there are a lot of kids on the main street. I walk down Kinau street, and there are schools down there. We see parents dropping their kids off and a lot of kids crossing the street, and everybody seems pretty well behaved. I've never had a problem with it. In fact, people are very courteous. How are the schools in the area? I don't have children or grandchildren so I can't tell you what happens in the school, but I can tell they're well monitored. They have drop-off parking blocked off for people dropping off their children, and I see smiles on their faces, responsible parents. I've never seen stray kids walking around with nothing to do. What is the noise le vel like? Any excessive noise from traffic, planes, neighbors, etc.? No, not really. We live near a freeway. I really don't hear the noise from the freeway. The only thing I find in my apartment because I live right near the freeway, I get a lot of freeway dust in the house so I clean my floors regularly. It is quiet. I always sleep here. There's usually a nice breeze, and I keep my windows open. If I close them, I wouldn't get the freeway dirt, but I would rather just scrub my floors and have a nice breeze going through. What are the things you like best about your neighborhood? I like being close to the stores, the friendly people. I really do enjoy my morning walk. I spend time out there, and everybody's friendly. You get to say hi and you see some of the same people doing the same routine. I find that comforting and pleasant. I feel safe here. My building is secure. I just haven't seen any evidence of crime at all. Across from Thomas Square, they have some people in town on the street there. I don't know what they're protesting, but there's never even any trouble there. There's a number of homeless people who live there, and they seem to be fine. I feel bad that they don't have a home, but I'm glad that it's not me. What are the things that you would like to change about your neighborhood, if any? I really can't think of anything that I would change. I'm comfortable here. The management of my building is nice. The neighbors are pleasant. People take care of their yard. There's one guy at house next door to me--they have a little pond. There are lily pads in their front yard, and it's maintained. People maintain their homes here. I don't really have a lot of interaction with my neighbors, it's mostly with people in my building. What are your favorite nearby restaurants? If I want to go to lunch, I'll go downtown and there are several places. Che Pasta is nice. I don't go out that much. You can always order a pizza if you're real hungry. I'm on a pretty strict budget, so mostly I do my cooking at home. People in my building share, too. Every bit of time, someone makes a big bowl of soup. Everybody kind of shares, so it's pretty nice. Just like having family with you? Sort of. Everybody's on a first-name basis and has a smile. I have not heard anybody complain. As I said, I don't really know my neighbors that well. They're quiet, they go out and water their yard at 6 in the morning and do what they do. So I think it's a very nice neighborhood, actually. What about favorite nearby places to shop? The thr ift store on Kaheka Street? [Laughter] I just shop at the grocery stores. I got plenty of clothes so I don't really need things like that, but there's a nice thrift store there. That's about it. I haven't bought anything in a while, so I can't say. Are there any events in your neighborhood or nearby that you like to take part in? Not yet, but I'm starting to. I've gained a lot of weight, so I've got a couple of people. Where we live, there's a big hill, and we're going to start walking up and down the hill every morning. I've got to take some weight off. So a lot of people walk. That's most of the activity. Would you recommend buying a house in your neighborhood? Yeah. I don't see why not. It depends. I'm looking out at my window here. I see older homes, and there are a couple of for sale signs out there that I see in the morning. I think most of these people are pretty well-set, but I wouldn't hesitate if I had the money to buy here. (My brother and I had a home at 500 University Street a number of years ago. That was a pretty good experience. When he died, I just had to start renting.) But I recommend it. It's a good neighborhood. If someone has children, the schools are close. The bus lines are close. Every time I ride the bus, there are groups of kids on it. King Street and Beretania are the main arteries going east to west, so it's real easy to get around. |
