Neighborhood Interview from a neighbor who lives there.

What factors influenced your decision to move to the Downtown neighborhood?

I was going to be working in Downtown, so ideally I want to live somewhere where I would be able to walk to work. I like the convenience factor of being able to walk to the grocery store, walk to Chinatown. It's just very central. We're right next to the Pali and we can easily drive to the windward side as well. Very convenient.

How does it compare to where you lived before?

We actually moved here from the mainland, from San Diego. It was very different. In San Diego, we were just a couple of hundred yards from the beach, the boardwalk. So it was a pretty vast difference.

In San Diego, you were still near the ocean. Do you consider Downtown near the ocean? Where do you go to the beach?

We drive to Ala Moana most of the time, so it's still very close. It's a couple minutes drive.

How is parking there? Is there always parking available on weekends?

In the building where we live, we always have plenty of parking. But whenever we want to go down to the beach, sometimes it would be a little bit of a struggle. We just have to get there early enough to make sure we have parking.

Do you walk or do you take the car to grocery stores? How is the traffic there if you do take the car?

I walk because the building we're in is right across Safeway, right by Nuuanu. I literally pretty much walk straight across the street and do my shopping. It's so convenient. I don't have a car, so anywhere I need to go I either walk, or I wait for my husband on the weekends and that's when we drive somewhere.

So other than getting over to Ala Moana or somewhere else on weekends, you didn't really need the car?

That's right. It actually saved us quite a bit of money.

Do you have any concerns with crime in the neighborhood?

There are some pockets where I probably would stay away from if I was going to be walking at night time. There are some areas where I wouldn't go by myself, being a woman, at night time. But in the daytime, everything is fine. I've never had any issue. I'd just recommend women to be a little bit cautious at night time about certain neighborhoods in Downtown or Chinatown to walk by themselves. But that could happen anywhere.

How is the noise level like?

In the building where we live, we're actually on the side right by the Pali, so ours is probably a little bit noisier. There are three towers in this particular building, so I think if we were at one of the other towers, it wouldn't be so noisy. We just have a little bit of traffic noise from the Pali.

You don't get noise from planes or anything, it's just mainly traffic noise?

Yes.

What are the things you like best about your neighborhood?

I particularly like the grounds of our building. We're living at Queen Emma Gardens. The grounds are amazing. We have a great pool, a nice kiddie pool, nice green garden areas to walk around. On top of that, I really like the convenience factor of not needing to have car, being able to walk to grocery shopping, walk to Chinatown, and walk to my work.

If you'd like to change something about your neighborhood, what would you like to change about it?

One of the factors for me is that I can't walk to the beach. And at night time on the weekdays, downtown kind of shuts down. It's really for the business people. It's more active in the daytime. On the weekends, they have some bars and clubs that are open. But on the weekdays, there really isn't much to do after work hours because everything shuts down after the businesses close.

What are your neighbors like? Did you get to know some neighbors?

I guess one drawback of living in a high rise is that it does seem like people are very private. They just go into their apartments and close the door. We didn't really get to know our neighbors very well. But for someone who likes to have privacy, it's maybe a good thing.

Any nearby favorite restaurants that you like to eat at?

There's a place called JJ Dolan's that has great pizza. It's like a little bar, but they're known for their pizzas. It's really good, like homemade style pizzas. There are a few bars and some nice restaurants--there's Du Vin.

You mentioned Safeway for grocery shopping. Any other places to shop nearby?

For most of my produce, it's just so much more economical to go to Chinatown. For the other goods, we have everything that we need at Safeway. There's a Longs too, so we really have everything. It's pretty convenient.

Are there any events in your neighborhood or nearby that you like to take part in?

There are, but we're not involved too much. We're just kind of getting settled here from the mainland. We're just really focusing on our work and getting relocated.

You're probably walking distance to get to see the Christmas parade, I would assume, because that kind of goes right down that street through Chinatown, past in front of the government buildings?

That's right. Unfortunately, we've never participated. But there's always a ton of things to do.

I guess Chinatown probably has some events--like Chinese New Year's, that type of thing. That's probably pretty loud.

Yes, that's true.

Would you recommend buying a condo in the downtown neighborhood?

Yes, I think for some people that would be the perfect option. For someone who works in Downtown, that would be a really convenient option. Or if they need to drive somewhere, it's still very convenient, you can get on the freeways, you can get on the Pali. It's very nice and central.

Is the biggest drawback not being able to walk to the beach? What's the biggest drawback?

It feels like it closes down after 5:00. A lot of the places would just close. Much of the activity is there during the daytime. It's just kind of strange. It's not like the typical downtown that people might be used to, like San Francisco, where it's going at all hours of the day. But it could have its benefits, too. It's a little more quiet. And there are some pockets of areas where you can find some really fun places to go to. It's a different downtown. For someone who's never been there before, I would recommend them to check it out first. They might expect it to be something like San Francisco, when it's just not.

That's a good point. For someone who's thinking about moving there, they might want to check it out in the evening, too, not just during the day, to see what's going on, that type of thing.

Right, that would be the recommendation.
